Children’s Content Funding Discussion Paper

NZ On Air have released a discussion paper on Children’s Content Funding.

Kidsonscreen encourages interested parents and caregivers to look at it and see what possibilities are ahead and to make a submission on what you think the future is for New Zealand children’s screen content.

Chair Janette Howe was invited to contribute to the drafting of this document with others in the children’s media industry and it is great that children’s rights to diverse local content has been embraced and that our Media Rights Declaration is also cited as a possible strategic framework.

Ultimately we need to look to future proof kids content and to ensure that it is not marginalised further by commercial broadcasters. We have lost diversity in the current environment and the type of content that can inspire and inform our kids. There needs to be a plan for delivering this content so it does not suffer the same fate of shows which don’t fit the current commercial environment.

Kidsonscreen will be making a submission, but do show that kids content is important by either signing our declaration or contributing to the discussion paper. There is no doubt that we need to urge for more funding for children’s content so that both diversity and a home for that content can be delivered.
